In case you've been wondering what kind of animal that praying girl with the horns is supposed to be, Tarrin said she's a gazelle.

Yesterday, I mentioned that Daniel and Maki met in the first Maki story. Obviously, Maki is based on Tarrin himself and Daniel is based on Fred Neidhart. Now, I'm wondering how much of this story Maki/Tarrin being a kid at a summer camp with Daniel/Fred being a counselor there could be based on real life events. Real-life Neidhardt is five years older than Tarrin, so if Maki/Tarrin was 13 at the time this story takes place, Daniel/Fred would have been 18 and thus within the normal age range of a camp counselor.
Also on the back of the book, Daniel says: "Before reading this book, you need to know one thing... this story was inspired by true memories of a camp counselor!" And Maki adds: "And also by the true memories of a teenager... unfortunately..."

I case you're wondering why in the last panel Daniel and Maki seem to know each other, they actually met in the first Maki story (this is the second one).

You know, Tarrin calls this book "auto-fictional", meaning part is based on real events, part is made up. I wonder just how much of this actually happened. After all, there really is a camp ground in Ardèche called Camping "La Vignasse".

This comic was also published in Maki - Book 1 - Un lémurien en colo on page 9.

In case you're wondering why the recent comics have all been titled "1 October 2010 - Comic...", it's because Tarrin actually posted the first 15 pages of this book on in blog in late 2009, but later changed their publishing date to "October 1st 2010" and then posted an additional  20 pages over the following weeks.

About the 5th panel: Seine-Saint-Denis is one of the 101 départments of France. (The départment is one of the three levels of government below the national level, between the region and the commune) All départments have a number and Seine-Saint-Denis is #93. Since "Seine-Saint-Denis" as well as the French word for ninety-three (fr. "quatre-vingt-treize") are somewhat long and hard to pronounce, the inhabitants often refer to their départment as "le neuf-trois" (engl. "the nine-three") instead.
Seine-Saint-Denis is the départment with the highest proportion of immigrants. It was the scene of the death of two youths which sparked the nationwide riots of autumn 2005, a series of riots by mostly French youths of African and Maghrebian origins in the suburbs of Paris and other French cities, involving mainly the burning of cars and public buildings.
Together with the départements Hauts-de-Seine and Val-de-Marne, Seine-Saint-Denis forms a ring around Paris called la petite couronne (eng. "the little crown"). The three départements are part of Paris' banlieue (eng. "suburbs"), which in French are often associated with areas of low-income apartments and social housing.

1 October 2010 - Comic #336

"The (usual) million dollar question:
Which cover do you prefer?"

"Parallel to the (100% autobiographical) blog, for the past two years the adventures of Maki, who looks a lot like the lemur from this blog but is a 13 to 14 year old auto-fictional character, have appeared on Spirou magazine. (Some parts are inspired by real events, but most are fiction...)
Anyway, the point is that now I'm meeting two distinct audiences at signing sessions:
Those familiar with the blog and those who know only Maki in Spirou magazine.
Dupuis and I would love to merge the two audiences
so we can afford to buy a villa in Spain.
So, I'll start pre-publishing full pages of Maki.
For those who don't want to buy the book but still would like to know how it ends,
I suggest you start reading here and finish at an Fnac bookstore
for free and sitting on the ground as is only proper. ;)

The book's release is scheduled for January 20."

A little warning: As Tarrin implied in this post, he didn't post the whole book but only the first 35 pages (out of 45).
